What is PETG?
PETG stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol. It's a stronger, more flexible version of PLA that's perfect for functional parts that need to survive real use.
Why PETG Exists
Think of it this way:
- PLA = Nice to look at, but breaks easily
- PETG = Tough and can handle stress
- ABS = Industrial-strength, but hard to print
PETG is the middle ground.
What Makes PETG Special
- Stronger than PLA: It's more durable and less likely to break
- More flexible: Can bend a bit without snapping
- Still reasonably easy to print: More difficult than PLA, but much easier than ABS
- Heat resistant: Can handle higher temperatures than PLA
- Good detail: Prints look almost as good as PLA
- Sustainable: Made from renewable resources
What PETG is Good For
PETG is perfect for:
- Tool holders and organizers
- Mechanical parts and brackets
- Things you'll actually use and expect to last
- Parts that need to be flexible
- Items that might get some wear and tear
- Functional prototypes
- Phone holders, clips, handles
Temperature
PETG needs to be heated to around 230-250°C. It's a bit hotter than PLA, so make sure your printer supports it.
Challenges With PETG
- Stringing: Sometimes plastic makes thin strings between parts. This is normal with PETG
- Slightly trickier settings: You might need to adjust print speed or heat slightly
- Bed adhesion: It can be pickier about bed leveling than PLA
- Needs a heated bed: Most PETG prints work better with a heated bed (60-80°C)
These aren't deal-breakers—they just mean you need a bit more patience than with PLA.
Comparison: When to Use Each
| Need | Use This | |------|----------| | Toys, decorations, learning | PLA | | Functional parts, things you'll use | PETG | | Industrial-strength, heat resistance | ABS |
Pro Tips
- Start with PLA, then try PETG once you're comfortable with your printer
- PETG is less forgiving than PLA, so take time to dial in your settings
- String removal is easier when you do it quickly after printing
- PETG can be recycled where regular plastic recycling is accepted
